About the Carpentries

The Carpentries, encompassing Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry, is a global community of volunteers who teach foundational coding and data science skills to researchers. These workshops aim to develop essential computing skills, enabling researchers to conduct more efficient, reproducible, and robust research. The Carpentries’ curriculum is open source, allowing continuous improvement and adaptation to meet the evolving needs of the research community.

Testimonials from past participants

Here’s what past participants have to say about the Carpentries workshops:

  • Lynne Williams: “My labmates and I attended a Software Carpentry workshop a few months ago, and since then, several graduate students and RAs have been much more willing to tackle simple programming tasks independently. We have also now implemented a version control repository in the lab, which has greatly reduced the number of files flying around and helped to ensure that everyone in the lab has the most up-to-date versions of all the code we routinely use” (The Carpentries).
  • Katy Huff: “I’ve found that the time it takes to train new researchers to adopt essential software practices is vastly reduced by the workshops and online resources provided by Software Carpentry” (The Carpentries).
  • Josie Hughes: “What has changed? I work more quickly, and re-use my own code; I find more errors, and spend less time fixing them; I trust my results more; I don’t mind revisiting and revising old work” (The Carpentries).

Hosted across all UC campuses

This year, the workshop series is a collaborative effort across all University of California campuses, including UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC San Francisco, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. This collective initiative ensures that participants from all UC campuses can benefit from this enriching program, fostering a strong community of skilled researchers across the entire UC system.

Empower your research with the UC Carpentries Fall Workshop Series. We look forward to seeing you there.

Registration is open until September 8th, 2024. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enhance your research skills.
