UCSF’s SummeR of LeaRning is back: Learn R programming & R-based data science – open to all

Banner for SummeR of LeaRning 2023

By Albert Lee. Summer 2023 is your chance to learn R, a programming language for statistical computing and graphics. The UCSF Data Science Initiative’s (DSI) SummeR of LeaRning series is focuses on R-based data science. The virtual lunch-time workshops are designed for learners of all skill levels, and materials will provide practical ways to integrate tools and skills into research analysis workflows. You will consume bite-sized, 1-hour chunks of R programming. We encourage you to bring your lunch and sign up through the links below.

You may participate either virtually or in-person at Mission Bay FAMRI Library. In addition, all workshops will be recorded, and slides and code notebooks will be released prior to the workshop each week. Even if you cannot attend all workshops, we encourage you to register so you can receive the materials.

Workshops and dates

R for Everyone

Want to learn computer programming but don’t know where to start? This workshop is for you! The session will cover:

  • R and RStudio
  • Computer programming
  • Variables, conditions, and loops
  • Functions
  • Vectors and matrices
  • Data frames

R for Data Manipulation

This session will cover ways to manipulate data in R. Below are the concepts we will teach:

  • The Tidyverse
  • Subsetting with select() and filter()
  • Transforming variables with mutate()
  • Aggregating data with group_by() and summarise()
  • Relational data
  • Types of joins
  • Pivoting data

R for Statistics

Learn to apply practical statistics in R. We will cover:

  • Descriptive statistics
  • Confidence intervals
  • Hypothesis testing
  • ANOVA
  • Regression
  • Survival analysis

Beyond applying these statistical techniques, we’ll also cover ways to create data visualizations that communicate results.
