DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Information Technology Services (ITS) Department is a security first organization. We deliver data and technology services and, through collaboration with partners, transform the role of Information Technology to advance the UC mission. We maintain an innovative, inclusive, and supportive work environment.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Marketing and Communications Intern will help promote community among the nearly 10,000 IT professionals across the university, in addition to a broader community of those supporting these professionals and their work. The intern will use one or more of the following skills to support that goal: (1) science/technical writing; (2) video editing and production; (3) marketing analytics and data visualization; (4) database development (i.e. HubSpot, Salesforce); (5) Social media management; (6) Design – PPT, Canva, Photoshop; (7) Strategic planning/project planning; and/or (8) client management.

The IT Marketing and Communications internships are year-round, paid positions designed for currently enrolled University of California students interested in information technology and higher education and marketing. Schedules and hours may vary depending on classes and other activities.  Hours will vary depending on the interns’ school schedules and availability. 

Participants will:

  • Be part of a professional, experienced agency/ team addressing a range of marketing/general management topics.
  • Review business goals in the context of customer needs, behaviors and market dynamics to create strategic and project plans.
  • Implement plans flawlessly, on-time and on-budget
  • Maintain a content calendar based on customer/business priorities.
  • Create content on a daily basis by conducting interviews and research to produce original pieces of written and/or recorded content in various formats, from news articles and info-graphics to video clips.
  • Produce reports for the all collaborators that validate ROI and inform on-going plans.
  • Propose and implement special projects that match your career goals and/or the needs you identify in our market.
  • Manage a representation on the vendor trade floor at the annual UC Tech conference in mid-July, 2023 at UC Berkeley
  • Network with other interns who are a part of this program (we anticipate 3 people at any given time), online and in-person, at work and at social events.

Responsibilities

50%Propose, research, and write articles and/or video content for a weekly blog. Propose and develop other types of content based on skills and interest. Assist with developing and implementing marketing communications/content plans. Employ analytics and data visualization to describe the business context (i.e. market dynamics, customer needs, etc) and evaluate ROI to determine marketing channels and content effectiveness. Actively participate in marketing and communications team meetings, contributing agenda topics, brainstorming ideas, and providing project updates.
30%Develop strategies for using emerging tools to increase communications and collaboration within the IT community across the UC system. Monitor and provide support for social media accounts, including Twitter, Instagram, Slack, LinkedIn and Twitter
10%Contribute new ideas for building community and drawing linkages between the IT staff’s work and the University’s mission.
10%Tech/Higher Ed/Health care Industry expertise: Collaborate with other IT functions in teams addressing higher ed and/or health care to gain a broader understanding of an IT organization servicing the higher ed and health care industries.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled University of California student.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communications skills.
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to write clear articles that cover a number of critical technology topics. Strong experience in IT a plus.
  • In addition, or as an alternative, strong video-production, photography and/or visual design skills to support the same objective (communicating about critical tech topics across professional colleagues)
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with social media communications tools and strategies, and familiarity with basic marketing and content strategy concepts and tools.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate and visualize trends to guide and refine the team’s strategy and output.

Education

  • High school graduate and/or equivalent experience/training.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary: $19.25 – $23.44 hourly commensurate with skills/experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This position is a hybrid with occasional on-site work.
